"The Chairs" is a classic absurdist play. Written by Eugène Ionesco, it premiered in 1952. The plot revolves around an elderly couple—the Old Man and the Old Woman—who are preparing to receive an invisible audience. The Old Man is convinced he possesses a transcendental message that will give meaning to existence and that must be shared with humanity. To communicate it, he invites a speaker who will speak on his behalf. The play, in a tone both comic and dark, reflects on loneliness, the need to find purpose, and the absurd nature of life. Visiting writer: Dr. Taylor Byas, Ph.D. (she/her) is a Black Chicago native who lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is a Features Editor for The Rumpus, a Poetry Acquisitions Editor for Variant Literature, an Editorial Board Member for Beloit Poetry Journal, and an Editorial Advisor for Jackleg Press. She is the author of two chapbooks, her debut full-length, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times, from Soft Skull Press, which won the 2023 Maya Angelou Book Award, the 2023 Chicago Review of Books Award in Poetry, and the 2024 Ohio Book Award for Poetry, and Resting Bitch Face, forthcoming in August 2025. She is also a co-editor of The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol X: Alabama from Texas Review Press, and of Poemhood: Our Black Revival, a YA anthology on Black folklore from HarperCollins.
Local writer: Rosa Sophia Godshall is the author of Many Miles (Harbor Editions). Her work has been published in Philadelphia Stories Magazine, Sentience Literary Journal, SoFloPoJo, SWWIM Every Day, Islandia Journal, Thimble Literary Magazine, Limp Wrist, and others. She was the recipient of the 2023 Christopher F. Kelly Award for Poetry, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, through Florida International University. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and a degree in automotive technology. She is also the managing editor of Mobile Electronics magazine, a publication for the aftermarket car audio industry. Join artist Cristina Lei Rodriguez and MOAD team members for a new type of workshop. During MOAD Stories, participants will enjoy a special curated tour of the Freedom Tower, focused on personal reflection and storytelling. Following the tour, attendees will gather in the Knight Skylight Gallery for conversation and artmaking. All ages are welcome. Museum admission and workshop are free for all those who register.
Cristina Lei Rodriguez is an American visual artist known for an expansive practice that includes installation, photography, sculpture, public art, and more recently, painting. Rodriguez’s artworks are influenced by her identity and experience in the cultural landscape of the American tropics. Her perspective comes through in the landscapes she creates that position nature as a tool for deep reflection about accumulation, decay, transformation, and texture. The works are variously textured- like layers of ground sedimentation- created from materials that are plastic and industrial and, on the other end of the spectrum, precious and earthy.
Visitors to the Freedom Tower may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets. The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event, including its attendees. By entering the area, and/or participating in the event, you consent to the recording and its use in any form.

Angles of Incredulity—Ariel Orozco

Dimensions Variable (DV) presents a solo project titled Angles of Incredulity by Ariel Orozco. The exhibition opens on November 15, 2025, and runs through January 17, 2026. Ariel Orozco’s practice embarks on a journey across the surface of things, yet his primary interest lies in looking inside—in experiencing materials as if they were about to disappear. His work captures reflections in passing and headlights coming toward him on the road, or the perfume of a stranger that makes him think of someone else. For Orozco, everything is too fragile to take seriously and too fast to catch. He keeps walking and hurries on, because night is almost here.
Working within a diverse array of mediums, Orozco moves seamlessly between performance, painting, installation, and video in his conceptually driven practice. Often taking the form of interventions or actions, his work reflects on overlooked interactions of everyday life by providing new or alternative perspectives on the seemingly mundane. His work deals with issues of plenitude and scarcity, evoking both desire and lack, while weaving disjointed narratives with no plot or end, leading the viewer on a meandering mental path and inviting imaginative whimsy.

War and music may seem like opposites, but in Silent Night, they collide in the most extraordinary way. Composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell’s Pulitzer Prize–winning opera brings to life the true story of a spontaneous ceasefire on Christmas Eve during World War I—when soldiers on opposite sides of the battlefield found humanity in each other through song. Based on the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, this powerful opera transports us to the trenches of 1914, where Scottish, French, and German soldiers are caught in the brutality of war. But on one remarkable night, their weapons fall silent.
We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to open our season than with Silent Night, especially in November, when we honor our veterans and wartime heroes on Veterans Day. Multilingual, with English and Spanish projected translations. *All programs, artists, dates, times, and locations are subject to change.

Best-in-class experience design guides visitors through the Tower’s rich history—as home to both a newspaper and a refugee center. Guests will explore the many quests for freedom that have led generations to Miami and have the opportunity to share their own stories, celebrating the Tower as a 21st-century beacon of hope, courage, and opportunity.
