Land, Text, Light: Out of the Vault continues a series of exhibitions for Miami Dade College’s campus galleries that highlight works from the Museum of Art and Design’s collection. Some of these works are rarely seen, while others have been featured in recent exhibitions. The works by painter Lynne Golob Gelfman and multimedia artist Xaviera Simmons are recent donations to the collection, and Out of the Vault marks the first time the college presents these works in their galleries.
The five artists featured in this exhibition are Lynne Golob Gelfman, Pat Lipsky, Emilio Sanchez, Xaviera Simmons, and Purvis Young. Each of these American artists produced distinctive bodies of work that allow for rumination on the human condition. Whether it be work that represents land or evokes land, compositions that literally present text or conjure unique storytelling, or art that considers visual perception and how light and color coalesce, this exhibition invites unexpected dialogue about American art.

Algunas de estas obras rara vez se ven, mientras que otras han sido presentadas en exposiciones recientes. MOAD Talks- Miami as Archive: Memory, Place, and the Legacy of Purvis Young

Join the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC for a discussion centered on the works of Purvis Young as a lens through which to consider broader questions of artistic legacy.
This MOAD Talks panel brings together three South Florida cultural practitioners: Tayina Deravile, Cultural Arts Practitioner, Independent Curator, and Gallery Manager at Girls' Club; Barbara Young, Art Librarian, Curator, and Art Services Supervisor for the Miami-Dade Public Library System, as well as Co-founder of the Vasari Project; and Terrence Cribbs-Lórrant, Executive Director and Cultural Curator of the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum. Through exhibition-making and public programming centered on the archives of Purvis Young, each panelist has engaged Young’s work as a lens through which to consider broader questions of artistic legacy, memory, and archival practice in Miami.
This panel will examine their distinct cultural frameworks and consider how artist legacies shape and are shaped by archival practices in the city, collectively situating Young’s legacy within Miami’s evolving art historical canon, foregrounding his continued relevance to the city’s cultural and social landscape. Este panel de MOAD Talks reúne a tres profesionales culturales del sur de Florida: Tayina Deravile, practicante de artes culturales, curadora independiente y gerente de galería en Girls' Club; Barbara Young, bibliotecaria de arte, curadora y supervisora de servicios de arte para el Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas de Miami-Dade, así como cofundadora del Proyecto Vasari; y Terrence Cribbs-Lórrant, director ejecutivo y curador cultural del Museo del Precinto de Policía y Palacio de Justicia de la Comunidad Negra.
A través de la realización de exposiciones y programación pública centradas en los archivos de Purvis Young, cada panelista ha abordado la obra de Young como una lente para considerar preguntas más amplias sobre legado artístico, memoria y prácticas de archivo en Miami.
