VSA Florida’s A New Definition of Dance in Miami
October 25 – 26, 2016
Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs is proud to partner with VSA Florida to bring “A New Definition of Dance” to Miami and offer free workshops for professional dancers and choreographers, as well as masterclasses for students ages 13-22. “A New Definition of Dance” features internationally renowned dancers of exceptional merit, who also have disabilities. With nearly two weeks of statewide events, it breaks down negative stereotypes of people with disabilities, introduces students and veterans with disabilities to a new method of communication and self-expression, encourage dance majors to explore dance forms through varying types of bodies and abilities, and provide career development and professional opportunities for artists with disabilities.

SOUTH FLORIDA CULTURAL CONSORTIUM

The South Florida Cultural Consortium Program for Visual and Media Artists offers the largest regional, government-sponsored artists’ grants in the United States, awarding $15,000 and $7,500 fellowships to resident visual and media artists from the counties of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach. Since it was established in 1988, the Consortium has awarded close to $2 million in fellowships to over 200 artists.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC ART
The piece will be sited on an open lawn with a creek as background. The piece will be Miami-Dade County’s first public artwork celebrating the County’s rich legacy of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) accomplishments. The piece will allow visitors to reflect on historic LGBT triumphs while drawing inspiration from the strength of its natural surroundings.

the 2016 Common Field Visual Arts Convening in Miami

Miami-Dade artists are encouraged to apply for this scholarship opportunity to attend The Common Field Convening, an itinerant annual gathering created by and for the field of visual artists' organizations, taking place October 20-23, 2016 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. This 4-day program includes panel discussions, breakout sessions and workshops and is organized by BFI (Bas Fisher Invitational), Cannonball, Dimensions Variable and Locust Projects, with an alliance of Miami organizers support by national Common Field staff and members. FY2016-2017 ARTIST ACCESS (ART) GRANTS PROGRAM - FALL QUARTER

Program provides funding support for practicing, professional and emerging artists residing in Miami-Dade County to take advantage of specific professional development and skill-building opportunities (outside Miami-Dade County) to help advance their careers as working artists. Funds may be used to cover attendance at advanced workshops, master classes, or seminars; to participate in artist residencies; to engage in activities that are specifically capable of advancing or propelling a professional career; etc. New this year: Artists can now apply for up to $1,500.
Prospective applicants must call and request a phone consultation with the Artist Access Program Administrator, Mary Luft (305) 324-4337 at least one week prior to submitting an application by the postmark deadline (prior to Oct. 28, 2016).

THE KNIGHT FOUNDATION’S - KNIGHT CITIES CHALLENGE
October 10 – November 3, 2016
The Knight Cities Challenge seeks new ideas from innovators who will take hold of the future of our cities. From October 10 to November 3, 2016, Knight invites applicants from anywhere to submit their ideas for making the 26 Knight communities more vibrant places to live and work. Give Miami Day 2016 Registration Is Now Open

Give Miami Day is the biggest annual giving event in the Southeast United States. It
allows all individuals in our community to make a philanthropic impact by collectively supporting our local nonprofit organizations. Twenty-four hours of giving begins at 12:00 a.m. November 17 and ends at 12:00 a.m. on November 18, 2016. Throughout the day, individuals may view online profiles of more than 600 nonprofit organizations serving Miami-Dade County and make a charitable gift here on givemiamiday.org.
The Miami Foundation and our partners will maximize the community's generosity by making a bonus gift for every donation between $25 and $10,000 received on November 17 through givemiamiday.org.

2017 “All Kids Included” Student Art Competition
Deadline: February 6, 2017
Do you know a young artist? Submissions are now being accepted for the 2017 All Kids Included (AKI) district-wide student visual art competition open to all Miami-Dade students in grades Pre K-12. Celebrating inclusion, empowerment, and determination, the contest is held each year in conjunction with the AKI Family Arts Festival held at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.
For the art contest, student artists are invited to submit original artwork depicting the contest theme and are asked to draw on the selected book for inspiration. The 2017 contest theme is “Celebrating Inclusion, Empowerment and Determination,” and is inspired by the award-winning book, Firebird by African American ballerina Misty Copeland, illustrated by Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honoree Christopher Myers. Firebird is a poetic story of encouragement, determination, overcoming self-doubt, and finding the power within yourself to follow your dreams and succeed.
