After Hurricane Irma, our work to return great theater to the Coconut Grove Playhouse remains firmly on track. In preparation for the storm, the Department of Cultural Affairs continued to protect and secure all of its theaters and arts centers against the elements, including the Playhouse, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Miami-Dade County Auditorium and the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

The condition of each of the Department’s cultural facilities was assessed as soon as it was safe to go on site after the hurricane. Immediate actions were taken to address the minimal damages incurred at each of our facilities. For the Playhouse, our County team began the day after the storm to replace and repaint the plywood that sheaths the scaffolding at the ground level of the historic front building on Charles Street. This was the extent of the repair work required for the damage sustained.

We look forward to sharing exciting news soon about our progress on the essential architectural and engineering work now underway, moving us ever closer to bringing back great regional theater to Coconut Grove.
